Buying Infant Car Seats -- Some Things to Consider

The need for infant car seats in this day and age simply cannot be overstated. More and more people are buying cars, as more and more young people - incidentally also young parents - become empowered to spend for themselves. And if you happen to be one of these young parents, and you have little children of your own, you would not want to deny them the pleasure of riding in the car with mommy and daddy... but neither would you want to put their health and well-being at risk!

Infant car seats are the first line of defense against injuries your baby may incur on the road. Of course you can always say you'll take every precaution - you'll never drive drunk, or with the taillights out, or under any circumstance that will put your children at risk. But no matter what, you can never be too careful. Accidents are never planned, and they never come with a warning. You can't be responsible for the behavior of other drivers, either! The best you could do is hope that they, too, have little children and understand the importance of driving safely.

A good, comfortable car seat for your baby would allow you to concentrate on the task of driving, without worrying that a sudden swerve or break will harm the baby, or that a moment of inattention would allow your child to suffer an injury. Your little one will stay safe and snug within the protection of the seat, past rough patches on the road or unforeseen traffic incidents. But best of all, you won't be distracted. Did you know that a split-second distraction - such as reaching down to the car floor to retrieve a fallen pacifier - increases the risk of a car crash by as much as nine times?

When buying car seats for infants, take your baby's comfort into consideration. In fact, bring the baby along while you shop, and let him or her decide which seat is best! Be objective, as well: is the material of the seat cover non-abrasive to the baby's skin? Is the head rest easy to incline? Is it too small or too large for your baby, and how long can you expect to use it before baby will need a new, larger seat?

Infants aren't the only ones who can benefit from secure car seats. When your little one has outgrown the need for infant car seats, consider investing in a booster seat. Toddlers are known to be quite physically active, and if we're talking about eliminating distractions - well, your booster seat had better be able to keep your little spitfire in his or her place!
